Dr. Abebe Gebremariam Gobezayehu

Abebe Gebremariam Gobezayehu is medical doctor with Specialty in Pediatrics and Child Health with over Twenty-nine years of experience and expertise in Maternal Neonatal, Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) programs. He has a broad knowledge, leadership, and technical expertise in facility and community-oriented approaches to maternal, newborn and child survival in low income countries like Ethiopia. As a country representative, he has been leading Emory’s programs in Ethiopia for over twelve years providing both management and technical strategic direction, coordination, and oversight to the different projects in the country. He is a country lead/PI on multiple projects on strengthening health systems through implementing evidence-based strategies on system strengthening of MNCHN.

Dr. Abebe has a faculty Position at Emory University with a rank of Assistant Research Professor. He is highly engaged in implementation research projects to solve a wide range of problems focusing on the factors affecting implementation, the processes of implementation, and the results, including how to introduce potential solutions into a health system or how to promote their large-scale use and ensure sustainability. His research areas mainly focus on improving the quality of care for mothers, newborns and children with main focus on innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community engagement strategies for hard-to-reach populations in Ethiopia. He is leading a team of experts that supports government’s efforts to strengthen and improve both the supply and demand for care by providing the required expertise on system strengthening with main emphasis on capacity building, Collaborative Quality Improvement, community mobilization, strong monitoring Learning and Evaluation and implementation research. Among others.

As a member of a consortium of global and national research partners supporting the ministry of Health and regions, Dr. Abebe is a national PI leading the Saving Little Lives (SLL) scale up project in Amhara region designed to scale up the SLL minimum care package in 77 hospitals in the region. He is a national PI for the optimizing care for Newborns and children in Benishangul Gumuz and Afar region funded by Unicef (2021-2024). He is also leading other projects implemented in Amhara region in collaboration with Emory researchers, regional health bureau and universities in Amhara region.
